The Healthcare Plastics Recycling Council (HPRC) is pleased to welcome Westfall Technik, a global holding company that provides end-to-end manufacturing solutions for molded plastic parts, as its newest member. Focused on serving the medical, packaging, and consumer goods segments, Westfall Technik owns approximately one million square feet of manufacturing space and 400 molding machines across 19 strategic locations.
“We are very excited to welcome Westfall Technik to HPRC,” says Peylina Chu, Executive Director of HPRC. “They have a demonstrated commitment to sustainability by delivering products with high levels of recycled content and actively driving circular economy solutions for plastics. Additionally, their integrated business model and unique position in the value chain – covering all aspects of design and molding to assembly and logistics – will bring new perspectives to our ongoing project work.”
In 2020, Westfall Technik announced a partnership with Polycarbin—a software-enabled biomedical plastic recycling company that has developed a method for diverting single-use scientific plastics from landfills and incinerators by recycling it back into the hands of scientists and clinicians as circular economy products.
“Westfall is a champion of Plastics for Good and achieving both social and environmental sustainability benefits from using plastics, including life-saving and life-changing applications,” says Allison Lin, Vice President Procurement and Sustainability at Westfall Technik. “To do so, we must end plastic waste and that includes making sure there is demand and end markets for recycled materials. We are APR Demand Champions and we have achieved up to 100% recycled content inclusion levels for our customers. We’ve led the way by qualifying recycled materials for the labware space, and we want to continue to push the envelope and drive more usage of recycled content in healthcare in partnership with HPRC and fellow member companies.”
HPRC is currently engaged in multiple initiatives aimed at enabling recycling of healthcare plastics, including: research into advanced recycling technologies to recycle mixed stream healthcare plastics, a study of reverse logistics processes for collecting, segregating, and preparing healthcare plastic waste for transport, and focused outreach and engagement with recyclers.
